Welcome to the Website of the
Youngstown Opera Guild
The Youngstown Opera Guild (YOG) makes it home at the beautiful and recently renovated Stambaugh Auditorium on Fifth Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio. The 2500 auditorium has outstanding acoustics and provides the perfect location for the Guild and operatic productions. The production company, Opera Western Reserve, will perform Bizet's Carmen in November 2009.
The Guild is committed to supporting and keeping opera in the Mahoning Valley. We carry out our mission through four major activities. They are:
- The Giorgio Tozzi Scholarship offers $2,000 a year to a student at Youngstown State University majoring in either Vocal Performance or Vocal Music Education.
- The Michael Abrams/Youngstown Opera Guild Scholarship for Advanced Study gives an opportunity for Youngstown State University music student to study in an internationally or nationally recognized program. This scholarship is intended to assist a promising student to stretch their abilities. The amount varies each year.
- ImprOvPera, an outreach program supported by the Guild, brings opera to a younger audience in area schools and other educational venues in the area. The program provides first-hand experience with opera and improvisation.
- Monday Night Opera on WYSU.
These activities are supported through two major fundraising events during the year. Our Luncheon showcases our scholarship winners as well as other local talent. Prior to the performance of Opera Western Reserve’s Fall Opera, the Giorgio Tozzi Scholarship dinner is held. Through these events we raise money to support the above activities.
